I Want to OutSource Legal Services
There. I said it. And I mean it. But it's probably not what you think.
At the WILG Convention in San Antonio, there was a vendor selling outsourced legal services. The company was from Bangalore, India. That was the first time I've personally seen a company from out of the country selling their services. It's rather ironic, that they were selling their services at a Convention of lawyers that are dedicated to protecting injured workers and their rights.
So do I want to have my demand packages written in India? I don't think so. So what do I mean when I say I want to outsource?
We are in the process of going 100% digital, where all of the correspondence, pleadings, medical records and pretty much everything is scanned, digitized and on-line.
At that point, we will be able to access the entire file without leaving our desk. Or, if a paralegal has a sick child, she can work on the file from home without taking the entire paper file with her. I can leave work on time and work on a file at home, because it will be online.
We can outsource to part-time stay at home paralegal moms in town. Even if they just put together 2-3 demand packages a month. We can outsource to part-time stay at home paralegal moms across town, across the state or across the country. That's the beauty of being digital.
Another advantage of being able to outsource some of the legal work is it allows the firm to smooth out any bumps in workflow if too many clients finish treatment all at the same time. It also allows the firm flexibility to take on additional cases, class actions or other type of work.
Will we want to use the services of the legal vending company from India? I don't think so. The idea makes me hinky, but I haven't noodled through all the possibilities. I think once I look at all of the options, it might be moderately cheaper to use an Indian company, but that I won't do it because it just doesn't feel right. I'll let you know how things go.
Interested in outsourcing any research and writing work to an attorney in a neighboring state?
I recently posted about my idea for a legal technology startup and outsourcing was one component that I mentioned. I like the economics of outsourcing to India but I wonder what the legal issues are if confidential client info is disclosed and you have to take legal action against a foreign owned company?
I am not a lawyer, as my blog makes clear, but I plan to attend law school in the near future after completing my undergrad in Computer Science. I think armed with that background I could develop some truly awesome technology to make lawyers lives easier.
I have a large law firm in Chennai, India, backed by experienced personnel. If you wish to outsource your work in India, i am all yours.

Indian attorneys, Graduates with US/UK qualifications in Legal fields are sought after. International attorneys are impressed not only by the labor cost differential, but also by the quality and speed of work done. High profits follow skills, and the legal profession offers high-value opportunities, provided you act as an extended arm of an overseas legal firm LPO encompasses contract drafting and review, litigation support, intellectual property, and legal research and drafting in India, lawyers are paid $30-90 per hour whereas the cost in the US is $300 an hour. The English speaking countries account for $185 billion of the $250 billion global legal industry. Indians who are familiar with both the English language and the Anglo-Saxon legal system are equipped to grab a share of this business Outsourcing and off-shoring are concepts not new to India. After the hugely popular business process outsourcing (BPO),the country is currently witnessing a boom in legal process outsourcing (LPO) with legal firms from around the world, turning to India to outsource their legal services For a young legal professional, a career with an LPO is attractive for several reasons:
It is a sunrise industry which should see a boom in the next eight years; a learning opportunity for those considering legal and paralegal careers in the West; there is a tremendous variety of work at all levels of expertise; attractive remuneration and future management prospects; an opportunity to work in a corporate structure that straddles borders;high-end opportunities for graduates of top law schools.

It is the next big thing waiting to happen for India The tasks of paralegals differ widely according to the type of organization for which they work. A corporate paralegal often assists attorneys with employee contracts, shareholder agreements, stock-option plans, and employee benefit plans. They also may help prepare and file annual financial reports, maintain corporate minutes’ record resolutions, and prepare forms to secure loans for the corporation. Corporate paralegals often monitor and review government regulations to ensure that the corporation is aware of new requirements and is operating within the law. Increasingly, experienced corporate paralegals or paralegal managers are assuming additional supervisory responsibilities such as overseeing team projects.
The duties of paralegals who work in the public sector usually vary by agency. In general, litigation paralegals analyze legal material for internal use, maintain reference files, conduct research for attorneys, and collect and analyze evidence for agency hearings. They may prepare informative or explanatory material on laws, agency regulations, and agency policy for general use by the agency and the public. Paralegals employed in community legal-service projects help the poor, the aged, and others who are in need of legal assistance. They file forms, conduct research, prepare documents, and, when authorized by law, may represent clients at administrative hearings. Paralegals handle many routine assignments, particularly when they are inexperienced. As they gain experience, paralegals usually assume more varied tasks with additional responsibility. Paralegals do most of their work in offices and law libraries. Occasionally, they travel to gather information and perform other duties.
Paralegals employed by corporations and government usually work a standard 40-hour week.
Education and Training. There are several ways to become a paralegal. The most common is through a community college paralegal program that leads to an associate degree. 1. What kind of work will I be doing at an LPO firm?
LPOs do a wide variety of legal and paralegal work depending upon their requirements of their foreign clients - mostly US or UK based. The work could range from paralegal work like summarizing, organising, transcribing (voice to written) legal documents to legal work like revising basic contracts and researching legal issues. The areas in which the work is based can range from contracts to property to intellectual property. So you can even pick an LPO depending upon the kind of work that you're competent to do or enjoy doing.
2. Who are the well known LPO recruiters?
The well-known LPO recruiters essentially fall into 3 categories - (a) firms set up by foreign law firms or companies to purely support their own work (b) BPO firms that are also doing LPO work now and (c) specialised LPO firms that are providing services to multiple clients.
3. What are the pay packages like?
Entry level pay packages can range from Rs30000 a month to Rs.60000 a month depending upon your qualifications. If you are a qualified law graduate with paralegal studies or graduate with Paralegal studies could earn on the higher side.
4. What kind of qualifications do you require to work with an LPO?
This depends on the requirements of the LPO. For instance, for paralegal work, like document formatting, coding, summarising and basic legal documents even a BA ,Bsc. Bcom,LLB graduate would be sufficiently qualified, especially if he has received LPO training.
